Children’s Commissioner's 'uncovers a series of unacceptable practices' The Children’s Commissioner Professor Sir Al Aynsley Green today released a report into the treatment of unaccompanied children seeking asylum at the Border and Immigration Agency Screening Unit in Croydon. The report was severely critical of the way children were dealt with, and made a series of detailed recommendations. The Home Office published its quarterly statistics on asylum, highlighting the fact that asylum applications in 2007 were at their lowest level for 14 years. Refugee Council Chief Executive Donna Covey said “It is such a shame that this government takes such pride in preventing people from coming to the UK to claim asylum. It is frightening to think about what has been happening to those who have tried to flee their tormentors only to be stopped in their tracks by these strong border controls.”

Each report includes extensive, detailed and practicable recommendations that address challenges and provide ways forward in each of these areas. The Trustees’ Annual Report is now published online. The report is a summary of the charity’s activities and performance for the financial year. It is a statutory document which, together with the audited accounts, must be filed at Companies House and the Charities’ Commission on an annual basis. The Annual Report is usually published together with the Audited Accounts, which show the income and expenditure of the charity for the year and the assets and liabilities of the charity at the year end.

The Forced Migration Online research guide on Iraq has been updated to reflect rising levels of displacement and other recent developments. Since 2003, UNHCR estimates that at least 2 million Iraqis have left Iraq and a further 1 million have been displaced inside the country. One in eight Iraqis has been forcibly uprooted, and according to UNHCR estimates, some 40,000 to 60,000 are leaving their homes on a monthly basis. There are an estimated 1.4 million Iraqis seeking refuge in Syria and a further 750,000 in Jordan.
