New Publications and Reports

Children’s Commissioner's 'uncovers a series of unacceptable practices' The Children’s Commissioner Professor Sir Al Aynsley Green today released a report into the treatment of unaccompanied children seeking asylum at the Border and Immigration Agency Screening Unit in Croydon. The report was severely critical of the way children were dealt with, and made a series of detailed recommendations. The Home Office published its quarterly statistics on asylum, highlighting the fact that asylum applications in 2007 were at their lowest level for 14 years. Refugee Council Chief Executive Donna Covey said “It is such a shame that this government takes such pride in preventing people from coming to the UK to claim asylum. It is frightening to think about what has been happening to those who have tried to flee their tormentors only to be stopped in their tracks by these strong border controls.”

More responsive public services? A guide to commissioning migrant and refugee community organisations.
http://www.jrf.org.uk/bookshop/eBooks/2166-migrant-service-provision.pdf (pdf file, 608kb)
The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has published this report by John Perry and A Azim El-Hassan for Housing Associations’ Charitable Trust (hact). It is designed to help both commissioners and third sector organisations navigate their way through this terrain. Its main aim is to set out the case for migrant and refugee community organisations (MRCOs) as providers of commissioned public services – both to show commissioners why they should consider them, and help MRCOs understand and form their own views on what their potential roles could be.
