Uganda: Uncertain future for IDPs while peace remains elusive.
With the peace process plagued by delays and confusion, and with conditions in return areas often worse than in the IDP camps, the future for IDPs in northern Uganda remains uncertain.
In August 2006 the government of Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) signed a Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CHA), which led to significant improvements in the security situation in northern Uganda. After many delays, progress in the peace negotiations between the Government of Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Army in early 2008 gave rise to cautious optimism that an end to the conflict in northern Uganda might finally be on the horizon after 22 years of war.

Conference report
The report on our joint conference with Age Concern, 'From Isolation to Integration,’ is now available online. The conference, held in January 2008, was the culmination of a two-year joint programme focussing on older refugees by Age Concern, the Refugee Council and the Association of Greater London Older Women (AGLOW).
This partnership programme heard directly from older refugees and asylum-seekers about their experiences, and looked at how to engage with policy-makers and service providers to identify practical solutions.

Children’s Commissioner's 'uncovers a series of unacceptable practices' The Children’s Commissioner Professor Sir Al Aynsley Green today released a report into the treatment of unaccompanied children seeking asylum at the Border and Immigration Agency Screening Unit in Croydon. The report was severely critical of the way children were dealt with, and made a series of detailed recommendations. The Home Office published its quarterly statistics on asylum, highlighting the fact that asylum applications in 2007 were at their lowest level for 14 years. Refugee Council Chief Executive Donna Covey said “It is such a shame that this government takes such pride in preventing people from coming to the UK to claim asylum. It is frightening to think about what has been happening to those who have tried to flee their tormentors only to be stopped in their tracks by these strong border controls.”
